There are three states on this page, and they mean different things:

• Credential verified — matched to the IRS register and holding a recognised credential (CPA, EA, attorney, AFSP).
• Registered preparer — matched to an active PTIN record, but holding none of those credentials.
• Unverified — we could not match them at all. That is not a mark against them; many capable bookkeepers hold no licence and need none for the work they do.
